What is recorded here

No grave marker remains beside Ballymacadane Abbey because an unnamed landowner dug the graveyard out in the 18th century and scattered its mould across the field as manure. The dead were not removed so much as redeployed, their darkness mixed into soil that later grew ordinary things. Forgetting is not the same as losing; it is changing the shape of what can be remembered.

This graveyard is referred to in the 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork - vol. 3 Mid-Cork' (1997, 374-5) under the entry (no. 9484) for Ballymacadane Abbey (CO085-080002-). The graveyard is referred to as follows: '...No visible surface trace of graveyard around ruin; it apparently adjoined abbey on S side but was 'dug out' by landowner in 18th century and 'its mould used to manure the rest of the field' (Anon. 1894, 173).'
