Kilbrickan’s forgotten graveyard still lies under Mrs. Kirwan’s kiln field, close to the King’s river. Men called it the Black Loach because its earth came up dark and greasy when they cut a quarry there. In one quarry wall, bones poked out like the field was remembering what it had swallowed. St. Breacan’s church is gone, but the dead kept their address in soil no one thought to bury again.

According to Carrigan (1905, vol. 3, 334-5), in Kilbrickan townland, the site of St. Breacan’s church, ‘is pointed out, a short distance from the King’s river, in Mrs. Kirwan’s “kiln field.” The church and graveyard were destroyed so very long ago that very few know anything about their having ever been here. During tillage operations, however, the darkish, “greasy” earth turned up in the part of the “kiln field” known as the “Black Loach” tells its own tale. A quarry has been worked on the verge of the “Black Loach,” in one of the sides of which the writer, some years ago, saw the protruding bones of the long-buried dead’.
