Graveyard in Cork Great

Graveyard

What is recorded here

Graveyard in Cork Great lay low beside the coast, hiding bones and stones beneath salt and time. People buried their dead there, then forgot the place entirely. Houses rose above the graves, turning memory into pavement. What was sacred became invisible, not through cruelty but through the ordinary hunger for space.
The graveyard was formerly located in a low lying coastal situation. The OS Letters (1837) record the presence of a burial ground a little to the S and W of the house associated with Cork abbey where headstones and bones had been dug up (Herity 2001, 33). Corke Abbey House has since been knocked down and a housing estate built on the site (Healy 1975, 1-19). Compiled by: Geraldine Stout and Padraig Clancy. Revised upload on: 21 April 2018.
A medieval Christian burial ground; associated with Cork Abbey and containing headstones and human remains. Its location near the abbey suggests it is linked to the monastic community and reflects early Christian funerary practices in the region.
