Graveslab in Townparks

A large 17th century graveslab blocks the entrance into the subterranean burial vault of Walter Pollard located beneath the S transept chapel of Castlepollard church (WM003-096---). Stone steps on the external face of the S wall of the transept leads down to the blocked entrance of the burial vault belonging to the Pollard family. The top of the graveslab bears the armorial shield of the Pollard family and inscription beneath reads ‘Walter Pollard of Castlepollard, Esquire. Erected this monument for the Interminge of Himselff and Elizabeth, his wife, the Only Daughter of Arthur Dillon in the County of Westmeath, Esquire. And Those of The said Walter’s Name and Family. Anodomini’ (Woods 1907, 282). Below the inscription at the base of the slab there is the motto Memento Mori with a skull and crossbones with the date 1679.
