Graveslab in Gowran lies broken on the church floor, its incised cross still sharp beneath centuries of foot traffic. The slab belongs to the 13th or 14th century, older than the building that now covers it, and it marks a burial made before Gowran had its present walls. A person may have knelt there, named the dead, and walked out into rain. The stone remains, waiting to be remembered.

Lying on the floor in the SE corner of a 19th-century C of I church which was built on the former chancel of the 13th-century church of St Mary’s (KK020-060006-) in Gowran. The upper portion of a tapering slab (max. L 1.76m; surface L 1.22m; overall Wth at top 0.61m; overall Wth at base 0.58m; surface Wth at top 0.54m; surface Wth at base 0.51m; T 0.23m) with a chamfer (Wth 0.06m) around the upper edge. The slab is broken roughly horizontally about two-thirds down the cross-shaft. The slab is decorated with an incised cross. The cross-head consists of a four-armed cross with fleur-de-lis terminals and a lozenge at the centre. It is enclosed within a double-lined quatrefoil, with a triple curving motif projecting inwardly at each indent of the quatrefoil. Beneath the cross-head there is a concentric circular knop. There is no visible inscription. It is very similar to another graveslab (KK020-060055-) within the church. Stylistically this dates to the 13th/14th century.
