Grave Yard

Roadside atop ridge; roughly circular graveyard (diam. c. 50m) enclosed by stone wall. N of centre is ruin of Matehy parish church (9497). Large collection of 18th- and 19th-century headstones to S of church, earliest noted dated 1723; more recent burials to N of church; also many low uninscribed grave markers. May be site of 'vicarage of Hospitallers 'mentioned in 14th-century document (Gwynn and Hadcock 1988, 345). Hartnett (1939, 290) notes tradition which links this site with graveyard in Loughane West (9548) (Sheehan 1975).
