Grave Yard

On a very gentle E-facing slope in gently undulating rough pasture. Church (TS062-057----) is located midway along S side of a sub-rectangular graveyard (max. dims. 70m N-S; 47m E-W) which is enclosed by a limestone wall capped roughly with cement. Ditch cut along internal N side of boundary wall with upcast thrown inward forming a low bank. The Civil Survey (1654-6) mentions that there were 'on the lands of Cooleagh two little gardens of Gleabland, ditched arout neare the Church' (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 175). All the visible headstones are to the S of the church in the SW quadrant of the graveyard and date from the 18th to the 20th century. There are also two 19th-century table-top tombs roughly on line of the N wall of church. Lot of cut stone blocks strewn about the graveyard, completely or partially obscured by grassy hummocks.
