In 1654, Ballylusky held one castle, already broken in three quarters and ready to fall. Thomas Butler of Kilkonnell owned the place in 1640, but the survey gave no field, hill or boundary that would still point to it. The castle may have vanished so completely that even its absence became a local fact.

According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) in the parish of 'Mogowry' 'there is butt one Castle and that at Ballylosky and ready to fall' (Simington 1931, vol.1, 163). Under 'Ballylosky', which was under the proprietorship of ‘Thomas Butler of Kilkonnell Esqr. Irish Papist’ in 1640, the castle is described as ‘an old Brooken castle w[hi]ch is Cloaven in three quarters’ (ibid. 164). This castle is unlocated within the townlands of Ballylusky and Shankyle.
