Granuaile's Castle is a twelve-metre tower house on Clare Island, built in the 16th century by the Ó Máille and occupied by Gráinne Ní Mháille. In the 1820s it became a police barracks, gaining purple slate flashing on its two bartizans. The first floor held the main living room, with steps leading up to the bartizans and down to the garderobe. Gráinne may have watched ships past the east coast from those small rooms, waiting for her own vessels or marking dangerous ones.
