Grainger Lodge

Armorial plaque

What is recorded here

Set in the front wall of a house but believed locally to have come from Boyle. However, this is unlikely as George Devenish owned over 1200 acres in the Athlone parish of St Peter's. Much of it was bog but 464 profitable acres were held in Monkes Land, and in the 1660s it was owned by William and Katherine Devenish (Simington 1949, 92). This is a limestone plaque (H 0.46m; Wth 0.42m) with the incised date 1627, but the shield and inscription are in false relief. It reads: BVILDED BY GEORG. / DEVENISH & CESILY : / FITZGERALD HIS WIF. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
