Linked to a penitential tradition, the site is associated with a saint whose knees are said to have left an imprint on the glacial erratic, suggesting a place of prayer or pilgrimage. The name "Brideswell" may derive from an early Christian female saint, possibly St Bridget, common in such holy well traditions.
