Gorteen Mound in County Kildare marks the buried remains of Richard Eustace's castle, built under a 1608 lease that demanded lime, stone, battlements and a slate roof. The earth has swallowed the walls, but the mound still rises where a defensive stronghold once secured the area. An earlier moated site nearby suggests people kept returning to this exact spot because it commanded the land. What looks like an ordinary bump may be a chamber of forgotten stones, waiting for rain or curiosity to reveal its edges.

This site may represent the site of Gorteenvacan Castle (KD040-029----). Visible as a distinct cropmark of a mound surrounded by a narrow fosse on aerial photograph (CUCAP BGH 44). No visible surface traces. Date of upload: 8 September 2016
