Glenkeeragh Double-Banked Fairy Fort — Report the wrong picture

What is recorded here

Double banks and a cutting enclose an oval patch of marshy ground on Gregory Hill, where cultivation marks still trace the slope. The fort is large enough for several lives and sturdy enough to resist forgetting, yet animals have broken through and vegetation has swallowed the seams. Its double defence suggests people valued that exact spot highly, probably because it controlled entry, exit or view across difficult land. The fairness in its name may be later invention, but the shape records human ambition: to carry stone and earth up a wet hill and make the boundary visible.

Internal diam. 35m NW-SE, 27m NE-SW. An almost oval area enclosed by an earthen bank, a fosse and an outer bank. The inner bank which survives in places up to 2.5m in height is composed of earth and stone and appears to have been internally revetted. The outer bank which is also composed of earth and stone seems to have been faced with stone on the exterior and interior. A gap in both banks to the SE probably indicates the entrance. The interior slopes in line with the hill from NE to SW and there is clear evidence of cultivation. The site is much overgrown and interfered with by animals. It is situated on the SW slope of Gregory Hill in poor marshy land. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal.
