Gleneary Island is a crannog in County Mayo, Ireland. It is a man-made island, usually built with timber, stone and soil, and people lived there when shallow water felt safer or more useful than open land. The name and form point to a small household suspended between landscapes, doing ordinary life in an unusual place.
