Glencar Island

Twenty centimetres of grass and scrub rise above Glencar Lough, yet in 1541 two branches of the O'Rourke family contested the tiny oval islet. The Annals of the Four Masters preserve that dispute, suggesting the low crannog held strategic or symbolic weight for Gaelic lords even though no artificial construction has ever appeared beneath its soil. Water still surrounds the place where bloodline pride met an ambiguous birth, leaving the island both historically charged and quietly resistant to explanation.
