Gibbet Rath massacre

Gibbet Rath massacre occurred on 29 May 1798 in County Kildare, Ireland, when militia, dragoons and yeomanry under Sir James Duff killed 300–500 surrendering rebels. Duff had marched from Limerick with about 600 men and seven artillery pieces to restore communications and crush resistance, but many rebels had already accepted amnesty after Kilcullen. At Gibbet Rath, between 1,000 and 2,000 rebels waited to lay down arms; after Duff ordered them to kneel and stack weapons, an infantry and cavalry assault followed, leaving hundreds dead on the open plain.
