Gallauns

The site, comprising three standing stones, is located in a level tract of bog on the lower W slopes of Knocknafreaghane, and overlooks the N end of the Ardsheelhane river valley. The stones are marked ‘Gallauns’ on the second edition of the OS map. That at E is the tallest, standing 1.15m high and tapering in elevation to a point. It measures .7m x .5m at base; E-W. 19.15m to W is a small rectangular block, .55m high and measuring .45m x .3m at base; NNE-SSW. 1m to NE is the smallest of the three stones, standing .42m high and measuring .33m x .27m at base; NE-SW. Three large slabs, averaging 1m x .8m x .2m thick, occur between the upright stones at N. Two are prostrate and one is set on edge. Four fionnán enclosures occur in close proximity to the monument.
