Gallaun

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Gallaun is a tall standing stone in Glanleam, County Kerry, trapped inside a much younger earthwork called Cromwell's Fort. The stone predates the fort by millennia, forcing a choice between deliberate inclusion or careless overlap. Its base still holds packing stones and a leaning slab, evidence that people kept returning to steady what time had loosened.
In pasture, on level break on gentle W-facing slope with commanding view to W and NW over Lee River valley. Stone (H 1.6m; 1.2m x 1m) is roughly square in plan, long axis E-W. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
