Gallaun

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Situated on a N facing slope that overlooks Dingle Bay, this stone stands 1.92m high and measures .5m x .43m at base; ENE-WSW. It is of rectangular basal plan, and its sides rise more or less vertically for most of its height before tapering to a point at top. Numerous quartz veins are visible on the surfaces of the stone. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 185. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 28 July 2013
Likely dating to the Bronze Age, the Gallaun – Gleensk standing stone may have functioned as a territorial marker or ceremonial monument. Its orientation and coastal position suggest a possible alignment with seasonal or celestial events, though specific folklore or use remains unrecorded.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
