Gallán

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Gallán is a standing stone in County Cork, Ireland. It rises nearly two metres from pasture on an NNE-facing slope, its irregular body tilted along a NNE-SSW axis. The stone predates the 1842 Ordnance Survey map, suggesting people passed it long before surveyors drew the land. It may have marked a boundary, a memory or a warning, though no written account preserves that purpose.
Not shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map. In pasture, on NNE-facing slope. Stone (H 1.97m; 1.4m x 0.46m) is irregular in plan, long axis NNE-SSW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
