Gallán

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Gallán was a single standing stone on an east-facing slope in County Cork, marked on maps by 1937 but erased from the land around 1971. It stood in working fields, visible only when someone knew where to look, then vanished without a trace. The stone may have guided people through seasons or marked a boundary forgotten by later owners. Its removal leaves a hole in the landscape that no map can fill.
Not shown on 1842 and 1904 OS 6-inch maps. Marked on 1937 OS 6-inch map as single standing stone. In tillage, on E-facing slope. Removed c. 1971. No visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
Likely dating to the Neolithic or Bronze Age, the stone may have served a ritual or territorial function. No specific folklore or detailed local tradition is recorded.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
