What is recorded here
Gallán was a standing stone in a Cork pasture, marked on a 1937 map but absent from earlier ones, and it has vanished without a surface trace. It may have been a boundary marker, a meeting point, or a child’s climbing stone before anyone thought to call it ancient. Its disappearance is not a loss of treasure but a reminder that ordinary places hold most of their meaning in the lives that moved through them.
Not shown on 1842 and 1904 OS 6-inch maps. Marked on 1937 OS 6-inch map as single standing stone in field c. 75m to NE of possible standing stone (6936). In pasture, on SW-facing slope. Removed; no visible surface trace.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.

Likely dating to the Neolithic or Bronze Age, this standing stone may have had ritual or territorial significance. Its removal and lack of visible trace make its original use or folklore difficult to determine.
