What is recorded here

Gallán was a single standing stone on a southwest-facing pasture slope in County Cork, visible on the 1937 map but absent from earlier ones, then removed without leaving even a shadow behind. It may have marked a boundary, a burial, a meeting place or nothing at all, yet people stood before it, touched its edge and remembered it long enough to draw it. Forgetting came later. The grass closed over the hole, the stone vanished into cart or quarry, and the slope became ordinary again. What remains is the shape of the loss: a place that held one stone, then held none, then stopped holding the idea of holding.
