What is recorded here

Gallán is a rectangular standing stone outside a Cork ringfort, marked by deep V-shaped grooves that may have sharpened blades. It has resisted mapping for centuries, staying hidden from official surveys while serving the practical needs of the fort. The grooves suggest repeated use, perhaps by warriors or farmers, turning a plain rock into a record of human effort.

Not shown on 1842 and 1904 OS 6-inch maps. Standing outside ringfort (CO051-068001-) to E. Stone (H 1.07m; 0.57m x 0.26m) is rectangular in plan, with deep V-shaped grooves on its E face; possible sharpening stone (Condon 1916, 141). Probably dates to the early medieval period, given its association with a ringfort. The V-shaped grooves may indicate a functional use such as sharpening tools, though ritual or symbolic significance cannot be ruled out.
