What is recorded here

Gallan was a five-foot standing stone in County Cork, Ireland, now removed. Condon measured its height at 5ft 5ins in 1916, while Hartnett recorded 48ins in 1939, suggesting either shrinkage, breakage or conflicting judgement before disappearance. The stone may have marked a boundary, memorialised a life or simply resisted forgetting. Its absence is not emptiness; it is a shape waited upon, still pressing against the grass.

Not shown on 1842 and 1904 OS 6-inch maps. Removed. According to Condon (1916, 137), stone stood 5ft 5ins H, 24ins Wth x 12ins T. Hartnett (1939, 282) recorded a height of 48ins for this stone.
