Gallán

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Gallán is a one-metre standing stone in County Cork pasture, tilted NW-SE on an east-facing slope. It resisted mapping in 1842 and 1904, suggesting either cartographic neglect or deliberate human erasure. A subrectangular block of that size may have marked a boundary, a burial, a meeting place or a warning. The absence from official maps does not diminish the stone; it reveals that some truths outlast the systems built to record them.
Not shown on 1842 and 1904 OS 6-inch maps. In pasture, on E-facing slope. Stone (H 1m; 1.1m x 0.6m) is subrectangular in plan, long axis NW-SE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
