What is recorded here

Gallán is a three-metre rectangular stone standing in pasture beside an old ringfort in County Cork. It has survived the forgetting of maps and centuries of rain, still pointing west-northwest as if waiting for someone to return. Perhaps people once gathered there to mark a boundary, honour a dead person, or simply watch the sky tilt over the land. Whatever they intended, the stone remains clear while human memory blurs around it.

Not shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map. In pasture, c. 25m to S of ringfort (CO069-044001-). Stone (H 3m; 1.22m x 0.25m) is rectangular in plan, long axis WNW-ESE. Likely dating to the early medieval period, the stone may be associated with a Christian saint or local figure, given the name "Gallán," which is of Irish origin and may refer to a foreign or holy man. Its alignment and proximity to a ringfort suggest possible ritual or commemorative use.
