Galláin

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Galláin is a standing stone in County Cork, Ireland. It stands on a level shoulder above the Durrus river valley, facing west with its long axis tilted toward the southwest. Twenty-three metres away lies a stone row, suggesting the area once marked a boundary, a path or a ceremony now forgotten. The stone still rises unbroken while human memory around it has thinned to silence.
On level shoulder on W-facing slope in valley of Durrus river. Upright stone (H 2.05m; 1.05m x 0.7m), long axis NE-SW. Stone row (CO118-064002-) 23m to WSW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
Likely dating to the Neolithic or Bronze Age, this standing stone may have been part of a ritual or funerary landscape associated with the nearby stone row. Its alignment and positioning suggest possible ceremonial or astronomical significance, though specific folklore or use remains unrecorded.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
