Galláin

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Galláin is a hidden standing stone in County Cork pasture, recorded beside a boulder burial but no longer visible on the surface. It may have marked a boundary, a memory or a place of offering before fields, traffic and time covered it. What is lost has not stopped existing; it has moved beneath the grass, waiting for someone to listen at the right season.
In pasture. Upright stone to S of boulder burial (CO0125-010---) (Cremen 1924, 72). No visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
