Fulachta Fian

Fulacht fia

What is recorded here

Mammoth boars and battle-tired warriors danced around Fulachta Fian, leaping from hot stone to cold water until the air turned to steam. The field holds two fulachta fiadh and a dried holy well, marking a place where strength was measured in endurance rather than gold.
Grass-covered spread of burnt material on level ground at base of hill. Second fulacht fiadh (CO084-08101) and site of holy well (CO084-08103-) close by. Stream from well now dried up. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
