Fulacht fia in Tomboholla

Fulacht fia

What is recorded here

Hot stones, lifted water, poured back stones heated until they cracked. That is the work hidden under the grass at Tomboholla. The drain cut across the mound exposes a chest of angular sandstone fragments and charcoal-rich soil, proof that people repeated the process often enough to fill the earth with broken rock. A hawthorn stands on the ridge now, dropping berries into the same basin where steam once rose beside the stream.
In pasture, located at the base of a NE-facing slope, adjacent to a stream/drain at the edge of an expanse of bog which extends to NE−E. A low sod-covered, D-shaped rise (11.8m NE-SW; 11m NW-SE; H c. 0.6m) cut on the straight side to NE by a field drain (Wth 1.4m; D 0.6m). A layer (D 0.4m) of heat-shattered angular sandstone fragments in a matrix of charcoal-rich soil is visible in section in both sides of the drain. A hawthorn tree grows on the mound. A ringfort (MA062-136----) is located c. 100m to WSW. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 26 January 2021
