Fulacht fia in Knockeen

Archaeological monitoring (06E0069) of an extensive area (dims. c. 350m N-S; c. 200m E-W at N; c. 350m E-W at S) in Holmestown Great uncovered an area of burnt mound material on a proposed access road in Knockeen townland that was excavated under the same licence, and proved to be two fulachta fia. The S example consisted of two pits filled with burnt mound material that were probably troughs, although no mound survived. One pit consisted of two conjoined pits, filled partially with burnt stone and with stake-holes to the SW. 1.7m to the SE, the second trough was sub-rectangular (dims 2.1m x 1.1m; D 0.22-0.56m) and filled with deposits containing heat-shattered stone. There were numerous stake-holes and two post-holes in a cluster c. 1m to the S. No artefacts were recovered. Fulacht fia (WX037-090001-) is c. 17m to the N.
