What is recorded here

Knockardtry holds a fulacht fia, a cooking pit where hot stones dropped into water boiled food without a vessel. People may have gathered there to eat together, to mark a season or to share a meal after work on the land. The heat would have risen through the soil, and the smell of cooking would have carried across the townland. Much of the pit was levelled around 1975, but the black burnt earth and broken red stone still mark the place where people made water do their work.

This record was formerly classed as a 'fulacht fiadh' in both the SMR (1990) and the RMP (1997). The monument is described by the 'Castleisland District Archaeological Survey' - March 1990 - as a 'mound of burnt black soil and burnt shattered red stone [which] was partially levelled c. 1975' (SMR file).
