Fulacht fia in Killacloyne (barrymore By., Caherlag Par.)

Fulacht fia

What is recorded here

Killacloyne holds a huge burnt mound beside a stream, marking one of the larger fulacht fia sites in Cork. People may have heated water there for cooking, cleaning or ritual, filling the air with steam and smoke. The mound still stands sixty metres from the church, waiting to give back what road work and time took from it.
On W bank of stream and c. 60m N of church (CO064-08902-). Large mound (L 6.5m; Wth 14m; H 2m) of burnt material; irregular shape; possibly disturbed by road building. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
