Fulacht fia in Kilgowan

This site was archaeologically excavated (Excavation Licence No. 07E2886) as part of the N9/N10 Kilcullen to Waterford Road Scheme, Phase 3: Kilcullen to Carlow. A low irregularly shaped mound (L 9.5m; Wth 9m; H 0.25m) was composed of black silty clay, heat-shattered sandstones and charcoal. Underlying the mound was a subrectangular-shaped trough (2.1m N-S; 1.7m E-W; D 0.6m) with gradual to sharply profiled sides and a flat base, that was truncated by an oval-shaped arrangement of twelve stakes. Eleven individual elements of timber were also recovered from the trough, suggesting it was originally wood lined. Two isolated spreads of burnt material were found to the E, overlying silt deposits contained within an old stream course and close to a present day stream.
