Hot stones, lifted water, pouring steam: the fulacht fia in Kilcullen South was a cooking or cleansing place beside the Rylane River. Now it is a shallow burnt mound in marshy ground, partly destroyed but still wide enough to picture people moving around it in circles. The river could give water, carry heat away, and witness every loud clang of stone and wood. What they made there may have been food, cloth, broth, bathwater, or gift for another household.
