Fulacht fia in Keelbanada

Fulacht fia

What is recorded here

Located on a flat, low-lying landscape. Archaeological testing (09E0476) during 2009 on the route of the N5 Ballaghadereen bypass identified a deposit of burnt mound material (dims 6.6m x 6.1m; max. T 0.08m) that was set aside for resolution as Keelbanada 2 (Doyle 2010a, 11; 2012b). Subsequently, it was completely excavated (10E0304), and the horseshoe-shaped burnt mound (dims 7.5m x 6.5m; T 0.1m) overlay two oval troughs (dims 1.65m x 1.05m; D 0.55m: 1.2m x 1m; D 0.35m) cut into the grey marl natural soil, and there were two small pits or post-holes. Charcoal from the larger trough produced a C14 date of 2195-1979 cal. BC. (Bayley and Delaney 2011b; Bayley 2013b) Compiled by: Michael Moore. Date of upload: 10 February 2012
