Fulacht fia in Clogh

Excavated (E3468) during 2005 by E. Devine as a part of Site 3 at Clogh, which was one of the excavations undertaken in advance of the construction of the N11 Arklow-Gorey link-raod. Situated in a low-lying landscape c. 20m W of a small N-S stream, but the original stream may have meandered E-W across the site. An area of broken and burnt stone (dims. c. 9m x c. 6m; T 0.1m) had been cut by many drains but it overlay two troughs. A rectangular trough (dims. 2.1m x 1.8m; D 0.8m) with stake-holes at the corners had a clay base and was filled largely by burnt mound material. A second recatngular trough (dims. 1.6m x 0.7m; D 0.55m) with a wood-lined base cut the SW corner of the first trough. Two pits were also part of the complex, and fulacht fia (WX011-053001-), which might not be a separate site was c. 17m to the SE.
