Fulacht fia in Banada

Located on a flat, low-lying landscape. Archaeological testing during 2009 on the route of the N5 Ballaghadereen bypass identified a deposit of burnt mound material (dims. c. 7m x 6m; T 0.3m) with two pits (dims. 2m x 1.6m: 2m x 0.6m) nearby. It was set aside for resolution as Banada 1(Doyle 2010a, 11; 2012b). Half the burnt mound was excavated revealing two troughs. One (diam. 1.8m; D 0.7m) had straight sides and a flat base with some timbers, but the sides were of wattle and pegs were found in situ in the floor. The other trough was oval (dims. 3.3m x 1.78m; D 0.48m), also with some timber which produced a C14 date of 2009-1771 cal. BC. (Kyle and Delaney 2011b; Kyle 2013b) Compiled by: Michael Moore.
