Eight metres of dark gravel and heat-broken stone still mark the cooking pit in Ballykealey. Hot stones, water and patience turned a shallow valley field into a kitchen for people who no longer have names. The plough has cut through the edge, yet the shape remains wide enough to gather around.

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Spread (diam. 8m) of dark gravelly soil, charcoal flecks and heat-fractured stone noted in ploughed field. Close to base of slope leading to stream in shallow valley.
