Fulacht fia in Ballyhenry

Excavation licence Number 02E0701 Excavation took place between 20 May and 11 June 2002. The site appeared as a small area of raised ground adjacent to a small south-running stream and an area of flat marshland that surrounds the stream and borders the site to the west. To the east is a steeply sloping hill that rises to a height of over 90m. Ground clearing revealed the remnants of a fulacht fiadh or burnt mound. Excavation of a portion of the mound and two associated troughs followed. There were no finds from the site that would indicate a period of occupation, although fulachta fiadh are usually dated to the Bronze Age (Bennett 2007, 476).
