Hot stones, boiling water, clean meat or clean thoughts. Ballycunningham keeps a fulacht fia beside a spring, its burnt margin blurred by cattle feet. People may have gathered there to cook, cleanse or mark the edge of the living field. The site still smells of transformation, even when forgotten.
