Fulacht fia in Ballinvinny South

In marshy ground, on the E side of a stream at the base of a steep-sided glen. This fulacht fia was excavated in 2000, in advance of the N8 Glanmire-Watergrasshill Bypass. Prior to excavation, it was described as a high kidney-shaped mound. Removal of the mound revealed a semicircular setting of large heat-fractured stones set on edge, its open end towards the SW which was interpreted as a hearth. A charcoal sample from the hearth returned a calibrated radiocarbon date range of 1681-1460 BC, placing it in the Middle Bronze Age. Another fulacht fia (CO064-152----), c. 30m to the NW on the W side of the stream, was also excavated.
