Melt butter, warm hands or render fat: a fulacht fia was a kitchen without a chimney. In Ballintrane the earth keeps a shallow disc, ten metres across, where hot stones and water did the cooking. Sheep have bitten through the soil and exposed dark gravel, marking the place where people made heat visible before fire leaves a scar.
