Fulacht fia in Ballintrane

Fulacht fia

What is recorded here

Melt butter, warm hands or render fat: a fulacht fia was a kitchen without a chimney. In Ballintrane the earth keeps a shallow disc, ten metres across, where hot stones and water did the cooking. Sheep have bitten through the soil and exposed dark gravel, marking the place where people made heat visible before fire leaves a scar.
The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Small mound (diam. 10m; H c. 0.3m) in low-lying area of dried-out stream courses. Dark gravelly soil exposed by sheep. Second site (CW013-084----) c. 80m to W.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
