Fulacht fia in Ballaghboy

In wet pasture, to W of a stream and c. 20m W of a burnt mound (SL040-23802-). This fulacht fia was discovered during the construction of the Curlew bypass and excavated in 1995 (Channing 1998a, 154). It consisted of a spread (c. 12m E-W; c.16m N-S) of burnt stones in a reddish-brown silty clay matrix with a high peat content and occasional flecks of charcoal. The spread was partially truncated by machinery prior to excavation. Excavation revealed a trough (1.8m x 0.95m; D 0.3m), lined with wood, cut into the subsoil. The space between the edges of the trough and the wood lining was filled with a grey daub-like substance while the trough itself was filled with burnt stones.
