Fulacht fia in Ardnageehy West

Fulacht fia

What is recorded here

Fire heated water in Ardnageehy West, not for drinking but for life itself: cooking, cleaning, bathing, perhaps making leather supple or easing aching joints after rain. The mound still holds its burnt confidence, wide as a small house, with flat slabs resting across the ash like a table laid for guests who left before they finished speaking. To stand beside it is to understand that people did not wait for perfection; they used what the land gave, shaped it with heat, and shared the result.
In marshy ground at base of S-facing slope, c. 70m SW of ringfort (CO053-033---). Much disturbed mound of burnt material (13m N-S; 14m E-W). Dug-out material from S end of mound piled up on N side. Five stone slabs (max. dims. L 1.15m; Wth 0.7m; T 0.35m), two of which show evidence of burning, lie on grey ash-like deposit across middle of dug-out area. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
