Franckfort Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

No building of medieval date survives amongst the late 18th/19th-century demesne buildings. Datestone over entrance to bawn wall on E side is an insertion and does not date the existing demesne wall. The stone is dated 1732 and probably belongs to a post-medieval building on the same site. The surviving moat is late 18th/19th-century in date and has no medieval associations. (Cooke 1875, 223) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011
