What is recorded here
Franciscan friary in Demesne OF Down; Downpatrick, County Down, Ireland. The facts list several Downpatrick houses, including St Thomas the Martyr's Priory and Cruciferi Priory, but do not identify which one is Franciscan or give it a date. Perhaps a small friary stood beside the older priories, sending lean brothers into the town while the larger churches kept their ceremonies. If so, it joined a crowded religious landscape where rivalry and charity shared the same streets.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as FRANCISCAN FRIARY. Recorded period: MEDIEVAL; MED/L.MED. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.
The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
