Francis Crozier was born at Avonmore House in Banbridge, County Down, on 16 August 1796, the eleventh of thirteen children. He became a Royal Navy captain who joined six exploratory expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic before disappearing after 1848. The house still stands opposite his memorial in Church Square, keeping a quiet chamber for the boy who left the crowded family home to chase holes in the edge of the world.
